Don’t Worry. Be Happy!

I recall seeing a friend’s timeline recently and it was filled with quotes like “Your landlord gave you a quit notice? Don’t worry, be happy”. And then this morning it occurred to me to write on the world’s greatest medicine. Happiness!

Dr Cynthia Thaik, M.D., is a Harvard trained physician and currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California. And when such a woman says that “being happy triggers healthy physical changes in the body”, I’ve learnt to take such testimonies seriously.

She adds that “in fact, your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to improve your daily mood and emotional state, which supports your overall health. When you live a joyful life your entire body benefits, especially your heart and mind. Research shows that joyful people have less chance of having a heart attack and are more likely to have healthier blood pressure, lower cholesterol, weight management, and decreased stress levels. Humor and laughter also strengthen your immune system, boost your energy levels, and help diminish pain” (Source: Psychology Today)

Researchers from University College London’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health have this to say too after conducting a study on emotions and health of more than 200 middle-aged Londoners in their daily lives. Their results were clear cut. There was a 32 percent difference in cortisol levels (a stress hormone) between the least and the most happy subjects. Happy subjects also showed lower responses to stress in plasma fibrinogen levels, a protein that in high concentrations often signals future problems with coronary heart disease. Finally, happy men had lower heart rates over the day and evening, which suggests good cardiovascular health. (Source: Wired.com)

I can go on and on stating worthy medical researches that have strongly associated happiness with good health and longevity.  But that would be boring and you know I don’t like to bore you guys with all these Medical jargons. I’d just say at this point that in the words of Aristotle

“Happiness depends upon ourselves.”

So whatever you do, wherever you go, whatever life throws at you, do all you can to BE HAPPY and you’d see how healthy you will live.

Enjoy this week and don’t miss out on the chance to win Ten thousand naira before This Friday, only on this blog. Read more about the EnGw Christmas Challenge here
